Q. My electric utility company has always been a good company and provided me good service. Why should I switch now?

A. Electric utility companies are encouraging you to shop around because you may be able to save money by switching to a competitive supplier. Regardless whether you switch suppliers, your utility company will continue delivering electricity to your home and business, provide reliable service, and respond to power outage problems. The quality, reliability, and maintenance of your service will not be affected as it is still maintained by the Commission.

Q. When Can I Switch my electricity?

A.  Immediately, if you are still with your utility company and lock in lower rates.

Q.  How long will it take to switch?

A. The switch will happen within 30 - 45 days.  There is no cost to make the switch and your utility company will notify you by mail.  You will still receive a bill from your utility company for the delivery portion of your electricity.

Q.  Who do I call if I have trouble with my service or I have a power outage?

A.  You will call your utility company. ComEd or Ameren.  They are responsible for your service and power outages.

Q.  What is electricity deregulation?

A. In the past, one company provided all parts of your electricity service (generation, transmission, distribution, delivery).  With deregulation, these are now separate and you have a choice in your electricity supplier.

Q. Why should I shop for electricity and natural gas?

A.  Just like you shop for anything,  now with deregulation, you can shop for gas and electricity and find the best rates.  Remember, saving just one cent per KWh could save you thousands of dollars yearly.

Q. What is a Utility?

A.  The "local wires and poles" company that is responsible for making sure that you receive power to your home and business.  The utility is also responsible for maintaining the power grid and doing onsite work such as installing and reading meters and responding to outages.

Q.  What is an electricity/gas supplier?

A.  Your supplier is the company that provides the supply portion of your bill.  Before deregulation, you had one choice.  Now you have many choices.
